RHB-NST Spell-It-Right Challenge

KUALA TERENGGANU: It was a smooth run all the way for Salina Sayang Kamal Arifin that ended with her spelling "excrescence" correctly in the RHB-NST Spell-It-Right Challenge yesterday.
The winner of the Terengganu secondary school category walked away with RM2,000 and a desire to take home the RM6,000 top prize in the national championship in August.

Cramming up on "big" words in the dictionary over the past two days worked wonders for the Fifth-Former from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kompleks Gong Badak.

"I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to take part in this competition," she said.

The 17-year-old had to face a stiff challenge from contestants in the final round which went into a three way tie-breaker involving Wan Ahmad Luqman Wan Abdullah of SMK Agama Shekh Abdul Malek and Mohd Aiman Mohd Hassan Hilmi of SM Imtiaz Dungun.
Wan Ahmad Luqman, also 17, who was first runner-up, went home with RM1,500 while second runner-up Mohd Aiman won RM1,000.

Luqman said he had forgotten the spelling of the word "burgeoning" even though it was one of the words on his study list.

"I simply forgot it on stage as I was looking at the crowd."

Mohd Aiman said it was exciting being one of the 68 contestants in the challenge.

Salina's English teacher, Mahiran Mohd Noor, was exhilarated by the fact that one of her students had become the top speller in the state.

"I am also excited that our school finished third in the schools category," she said.

Sisters Nadia and Nashira Ashari, both 16, were delighted to help their school, SMK Agama Tok Jiring, clinch top placing in the state school title.

Nadia said it was great having her younger sister in the same team as they had always worked well together and this competition was no exception.

Their English teacher, Wan Hanizah Wan Halim, said the four-member team did well to beat others in the school-level qualifying rounds.

The winners received their prizes from Kuala Terengganu RHB Islamic Bank Marketing Centre marketing manager Wan Maznah Wan Yusof and New Sunday Times associate editor
